AAR Racing Highpoints

1971: Creation of the "Gurney Flap" (also called wicker bill) during 3 day AAR test of new Indy Eagle at Phoenix Raceway.


1972: World Records at  "California 500" Ontario Motor Speedway
Jerry Grant, driving the Olsonite Eagle No 48, becomes the first driver to break the 200mph barrier on an oval track in first day qualifying by posting a lap of 201.414 mph. He captured the pole with a 4 lap average of 199.600 mph. 
This represented a WORLD RECORD.

Team mate Bobby Unser, driving the Olsonite Eagle No 6, ran even faster the following day, setting a new world record with a 4 lap average of 201.374 mph (4 laps were: 200.597, 201.432, 201.509, 201,965 mph).

1973: 21 Eagles at the grid of the Indy 500.

1973/74: Gurney throws a challenge at Formula 1 by publicly betting $100,000. dollars that an Eagle Indy car will beat a Formula 1 Grand Prix car in a one lap contest at the Nuerburgring, Germany. The bet is widely discussed in the international press, nobody takes him up on it.

1976: Indy 500 Rookie of the Year
